    Enjoying the Struggle

    December 22, 2017

Sometimes I feel like I’ve chewed the sweet out of the gum. When I write, I desire instant gratification but that will never happen. I wasn’t a born writer; I have to work at it.

I’m constantly inspired but sometimes I can’t even start a sentence. It’s like I’ve have laryngitis-I have so much to say yet I can’t say it. Dorothy Parker once said about writers block, “All I have is a pile of paper covered with wrong words.”  I couldn’t have said it any better myself.

I’ve written about this before, we artists beat ourselves up. It’s a constant struggle.

The art that we create become our children yet we can’t get too close to them-for if they get criticized, we take it personally. We sometimes feel attacked and we overreact. It’s silly of us to become so close to something inanimate, but we unfortunately do. The purpose of creating art is not just to get our voice out there in the public but to create beauty. To create something that speaks to a massive amount of people. We sometimes say, “I understand because I’ve  been there” or we tell incredible stories about everyday people...because aren’t everyday people sometimes the most heroic? We write of what we know and what we’ve  experienced. Our art tends to have a thick accent representing our culture.

Unfortunately, writers block comes. Confidence drops. We talk ourselves into believing that we are incompetent. That we are not worthy of creating such beauty. We work with others and they build us up but we wonder why. Why do they want to work with me? Why do they think I’m talented? Are they just being nice out of pity?  Are they thinking, “Poor soul with a pipe dream, they’ll never amount to anything...?

Shit-why do we do this to ourselves?

We know in our hearts we are talented human beings. If other people who are a billion times more talented than you want to work with you, dang it, you’re talented! So work hard! Believe in yourself!! Straighten up and fly right!

    You got this!

Go create! It doesn’t matter if the sweet is chewed out of the gum-keep chewing that piece and add another flavor! Two pieces can often be better than one. :)

    Fiddle on my friends!
